A full symphony orchestra performing in a grand concert hall

The Orchestra of Nutrition

A single plant food is never one note. It is an ensemble of thousands of compounds, and its power to protect your health comes from how they play together.

SYMPHONY NO. I
The Concert Hall Below

Your gut is the room the music plays in

Trillions of microbes line your intestine like an audience that answers back. Feed them fiber and variety and they produce short-chain fatty acids, the compounds that calm inflammation and nourish the cells of your colon.

Set how many different plants you eat in a typical week, then watch the microbiome respond.

A well-fed gut community is one of the clearest signals of a diet that is working. Aim for range, not repetition.

SYMPHONY NO. II
The Lone Instrument

A soloist without the score

Isolate one compound and it can lose its effect. In a few documented cases it does something worse. Switch between the full ensemble and the lone note to learn what a single nutrient loses when it plays alone.

A carrot, whole

The full ensemble. Hundreds of compounds take their seats and play together, each shaping how the others behave.

From the research: Two large trials gave isolated beta-carotene to smokers. Instead of the protection seen from carotenoid-rich vegetables, the supplement groups showed a higher rate of lung cancer. Dr. Fuhrman applies the same caution to isolated folic acid and preformed vitamin A.

SYMPHONY NO. III
The Sections

Every family of nutrients holds a chair

An orchestra is organized into sections, each with its own voice. So is a nutrient-dense diet. Hover any section to hear what it contributes.

SYMPHONY NO. IV
The Rehearsal

Tune your own orchestra

Here is where you conduct. Switch on the sections and soloists you actually eat in a normal week. Your Symphony Score fills in as the ensemble comes together.

The sections

Families of nutrients. Each fills a chair.

The soloists

The six foods Dr. Fuhrman calls G-BOMBS.

SYMPHONY NO. V
The Featured Soloists

Six foods that carry the melody

Dr. Fuhrman gathers the most protective everyday foods under one word: G-BOMBS. Hover a soloist to hear its voice. The bars show each food's standing on the Aggregate Nutrient Density Index.

SYMPHONY NO. VI
The Conductor

You hold the baton

Every food you choose either adds a player or empties a chair. Dr. Fuhrman gives the whole score a single equation. Health equals nutrients divided by calories. Raise the top, ease the bottom, and the music swells.

A balanced plate. There is real room to let the ensemble grow.
